Afternoon Tea with Trish Cooke

Grab a cuppa and get to know multi-award winning writer and playwright Trish Cooke in conversation with fellow children’s book writer Davina Hamilton. Trish will discuss her work, career and offer a glimpse into her creative routine.

 

This event is part of SWG @ Home, organised by the SoA’s Scriptwriters Group (SWG). It is a week-long celebration of scriptwriters and will include the SWG AGM, afternoon teas and industry insider panel discussion. All events will take place online via Zoom.

 

Programme:

  • Welcome, introductions and housekeeping from Davina Hamilton (2 minutes)
  • Introduction from Trish Cooke and glimpse into her creative routine (10 minutes)
  • Trish Cooke will do a short reading from a book of her choice (2 minutes)
  • Advice for authors on staying creative and connected (15 minutes)
  • Q&A with audience (15 minutes)

Trish Cooke – Writer 

Trish Cooke writes for theatre, TV, film, radio and is also the author of many children’s books, including the multi-award winning So Much (Walker Books). She has written several stage plays including the Christmas show Cinderella (2007/8), the first panto to be nominated for an Olivier award. Between 1988 and 1996, Trish was a presenter on PlayDays (CBBC).

Davina Hamilton – Writer

Davina Hamilton is a rhyming children’s author of three picture books: Riley Can Be Anything (2017), Riley Knows He Can (2018) and Ella Has A Plan (2020). The former arts editor of British publication, the Voice newspaper, Davina’s titles have been praised for their positive representations of Black identity, garnering international coverage in publications including Huffington Post, BuzzFeed and the Independent, which hailed Riley Can Be Anything as one of their 12 best children’s books with empowering Black characters.

About the Scriptwriters Group

The Scriptwriters Group (SWG) is a community of scriptwriters and broadcasters. It represents writers and makers across digital, broadcast, AV and theatre. We support members and associates by providing professional, individual advice, negotiating collective minimum terms agreements with organisations such the BBC, and lobby on policy and legislation to promote the interests and protect the rights of scriptwriters.

Financial support for authors in need through the health crisis and beyond

Since March 2020, the Authors’ Contingency Fund has distributed over £1 million in small grants to authors facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.

With at least 57% of authors facing financial losses during the pandemic, we have helped people struggling financially due to contractual, employment and event cancellations, others who have lost income due to illness, and others prevented from working because of caring responsibilities.

As the health crisis continues, applications for grants continue to come in, and our emergency funds are running low.
