Grab a cuppa and get to know Scottish crime writer, Val McDermid. Val will be in conversation with novelist and Chair of The Society of Authors’ Management Committee, Joanne Harris, to discuss her work and career and offer a glimpse into her creative routine.

The Line-up
Val McDermid
One of the UK’s most accomplished and respected novelists, Val McDermid has sold over 18.5 million books to date across the globe and is translated into more than 40 languages. Her multi-award-winning series and standalone novels have been adapted for TV and radio, most notably the Wire in the Blood series featuring clinical psychologist Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan. The first series of the ITV adaptation of the Karen Pirie series, featuring a Scottish cold case detective, aired in 2022.
Val’s latest series, featuring young journalist Allie Burns, began with 1979, the first in a quintet, and will follow Allie’s life and experiences at ten year intervals. The second in the series, 1989, is published in paperback in February 2023. Val returns to Karen Pirie with her 2023 hardback, Past Lying, which will be published in October 2023.
Val was chair of the Wellcome Book Prize in 2017 and has served as a judge for both the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the 2018 Man Booker Prize. She is the recipient of six honorary doctorates and is an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda’s College, Oxford. She is a professor in the Centre of Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
Among her many awards are the CWA Diamond Dagger recognising lifetime achievement and the Theakstons Old Peculier award for Outstanding Contribution to Crime Writing. Val is also an experienced broadcaster and much-sought-after columnist and commentator across print media.

Joanne Harris
Joanne Harris is Chair of the SoA’s Management Committee. She is an author of nineteen novels in varying genres, including Chocolat, two collections of short stories, a Dr. Who novelette, various stage musical projects and three cookbooks. Joanne’s books have been published in over 50 countries and have won a number of British and international awards.
