AGM Week: Industry Insider – Sustainability Initiatives in Publishing – what is our industry doing to save the planet?

How is the publishing industry responding to the threat of climate change?

Where can we make the most effective changes to reduce waste and ensure sustainability?

Join us for our annual AGM debate, this year discussing the work of the Sustainability Industry Forum and their current projects, research and initiatives.  SoA Chief Executive, Nicola Solomon, will lead this #SoAatHome industry insider event – joined by Louis Coiffait-Gunn (Publishers Association); Amanda Ridout (Chair, IPG Sustainability Action Group), Simon Crump (BiC); and Debbie James (Kibworth Books). 

We will introduce the Forum and the industry targets for sustainability set out in Publishing Declares. Each panellist will be invited to give a brief update on their priorities and current projects, followed by a general discussion before opening up for questions.

Louis Coiffait-Gunn –  Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Publishers Association

Louis is passionate about helping improve policy with evidence and expertise. His career includes working with publishers, the UK government, universities, multinationals, professional associations, the media, and think tanks. Outside the day job, he’s a governor at a university and a school.

Simon Crump – BIC

Simon has been in publishing for over 27 years. During that time, he has worked at major academic publishers globally in production capacities. His last full-time roll was as Head of Supply Chain Operations at Cambridge University Press. He now works in consultancy, with current sustainability roles at BIC and the BPIF.


Amanda Ridout –  Boldwood Books | Chair, IPG Sustainability Group

Amanda Ridout is the founder and CEO of Boldwood Books, a commercial fiction publisher that was launched in 2019 and was named Fox Williams Independent Publisher of the Year at the 2022 Independent Publishing Awards. Prior to starting up Boldwood, she oversaw the rapid growth of Head of Zeus as its CEO. She was previously managing director of Phaidon, HarperCollins and Headline, and has more than 35 years of experience in independent and corporate publishing. Amanda is the chair of the IPG Sustainability Action Group and is a former chair of the IPG.

Debbie James – Kibworth Books

Debbie opened Kibworth Books in 2009 after a career in music as an orchestral percussionist. In 2016, the bookshop doubled in size into a second floor and in February 2022, Debbie and her team moved into a space three times as big again. In June 2022, she re-opened the old shop as Daker Books, specialising in second hand, rare and antiquarian books. Having joined the Booksellers Association when she first opened her bookshop, Debbie joined their Independent Booksellers Forum and now sits on the BA Divisional Board. She was elected as BA co-vice president in April 2022. Debbie’s key areas of interest within the book industry are wellbeing and sustainable bookselling and as such, she is a keen supporter of the BA’s group couching project and also sits on their Sustainable Bookselling Action Group.

Nicola Solomon – SoA Chief Executive

Nicola’s role encompasses protecting authors’ interests in negotiations/disputes with publishers and agents, advising individual authors and campaigning for authors’ rights, as well as for the wider cultural environment. Nicola is an expert in the publishing industry and the associated law, from copyright and defamation, to privacy, data protection and contract. She is a Deputy District Judge and sits on the board of the International Authors’ Forum,d the British Copyright Council and the European Writers Council.

At the SoA, Nicola liaises with the Management Committee to set and implement strategy and policy and to manage finance. She liaises with external organisations and manages the SoA team of professional staff. [email protected]
