Bristol Group: Why do women love crime fiction?
21 May @ 12:00 - 13:00 BST
In lieu of face-to-face meetings, our network of local groups are hosting online meet-ups for members to catch up and stay in touch.
Join the Bristol Group on Friday 21 May from 12pm for a talk by Professor Helen Taylor. Why do women love crime fiction? What is it about the genre that keeps women hooked?
During lockdown, many people have turned to fiction, and crime fiction – already the most commercially successful and popular literary genre – has seen surging sales. Although traditionally romance was most often associated with female readers, and crime with male, it’s now reported that 65-80% crime fiction is read by women, with older women most avidly choosing violent scenarios. In this discussion, Helen Taylor will suggest why women turn to this genre, and discuss how crime writing has evolved to address female readers’ concerns.
