Feel Good Friday – Stretch at your Desk

30 September @ 11:00 - 11:45 BST

Writers spend hours sitting hunched over our computers like baby vultures. We risk bad backs, aching shoulders and deep vein thrombosis. Without proper circulation, how can our creative juices flow? How can we keep supple in mind and body whilst meeting deadlines(or scrolling on our phones)?

Fitness professional and author Tina Baker specialises in fun, functional exercises you can do at your desk. With 17 years’ experience teaching older bodies, bodies with issues and fellow desk-bound creatives, exercise has transformed her body and mental health.

And you don’t have to commit to hours at the gym to get fitter – you can Stretch at Your Desk!

this #SoAatHome event is in conjunction with our Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network

Programme

  • Welcome, introductions and housekeeping from Lilly Brend-Fish, Events & Outreach Assistant, SoA (2 mins)
  • Stretch at Your Desk by Tina Baker (30 mins)
  • Q&A with audience (10 mins)
  • Summary and closing comments (3 mins)

Who is this workshop for?

Anyone & everyone. Tina’s oldest client is 97. Several are in wheelchairs. She also teaches bouncy twenty-year-olds . Her Zoom sessions have included dogs, cats, babies and, memorably, Mick The Stick – a sprightly stick insect (to be honest, he didn’t do much).

It will include Top Tips to keep moving and stimulate your body and mind.

What will this workshop cover?

This practical session will demonstrate simple physio approved stretches anyone can do, to make you feel better in as little as ten minutes.

The line-up

Tina Baker – Author & Fitness Instructor

Tina was brought up in a caravan after her mother, a fairground traveller, fell pregnant by a window cleaner. After leaving the bright lights of Coalville, she came to London and worked as a journalist and broadcaster for thirty years. She’s probably best known as a television critic for the BBC and GMTV, but after so many hours watching soaps gave her a widescreen bum, she got off it, lost weight and won Celebrity Fit Club. When not writing, she now works as a fitness instructor and personal trainer. She also rescues cats, whether they want to be rescued or not.

Financial support for authors in need through the health crisis and beyond

Since March 2020, the Authors’ Contingency Fund has distributed over £1 million in small grants to authors facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.

With at least 57% of authors facing financial losses during the pandemic, we have helped people struggling financially due to contractual, employment and event cancellations, others who have lost income due to illness, and others prevented from working because of caring responsibilities.

As the health crisis continues, applications for grants continue to come in, and our emergency funds are running low.

So, if you are in a position to help, please donate via the link below. If you are an author facing financial hardship, please click here to see if we can help.
