North East Group: Writing for the Stage
10 May @ 18:00 - 20:00 BST
Free
Join our North East Group on Wednesday 10 May from 6pm for their next in person meet-up in South Shields. This month, we will be joined by aspiring playwrights Jeff Brown and Susan Wear who will take part in a Q & A session about learning the craft of writing for the stage.
Jeff Brown is well known to TV viewers across the region as one of the presenters on BBC Look North, and his debut work, Cornered, played to critical acclaim in venues in South Shields, Washington, Sunderland and Durham in 2017. It told the story of Sunderland footballer David Corner and how his life was changed for good by one simple error in the 1985 Milk Cup Final, when he was just 18.
Susan Wear began her career in journalism before becoming a leading media and corporate communications manager in the region, working in senior roles at Newcastle Gateshead Initiative and Port of Tyne, among others. Her first play, The Duke in the Cupboard, was written before the recent hit film on the same subject (a TV licence rebel), The Duke. With this play, she was runner-up to Lee Hall (Our Ladies) for The Journal Writer of the Year Culture Award. Both this play and her more recent Five Dead, No Bodies, won critical praise after debuting at The Customs House, South Shields. Jeff and Susan’s daughter Alice Stokoe is also on the stage, where her roles have included a leading part in Mamma Mia, in the West End.
We’ll meet at the Marine pub, 230 Ocean Rad, South Shields, NE33 2JQ and will be followed by supper for those who would like to network. Attendance at this event is free, but you must register for a place below. Members will pay for their food and drink at the bar on the day.
