North Wales Group: The Translation Process

27 January @ 19:00 - 20:00 GMT

Virtual Event Virtual Event

Join the North Wales Group on Thursday 27 January 2022 for a discussion on the translation process. Welsh-language writer Sian Northey, translator of the first book to be published in both English and Welsh versions on the same day (Alys Conran’s Pigeon), talks to Susan Walton, translator of Sian’s novel Yn y Tŷ Hwn into English. They’ll be discussing Sian’s varied literary career; the translation process; the relationship between Welsh-language literature and English-language literature; and how it feels for the translator to become the translated.

All are welcome! This event will be conducted in English.

Sian Northey translated into Welsh the first novel to be published in the UK in its source and target languages simultaneously: Pigeon by Alys Conran (Parthian Books, 2017). Sian is a published author who writes in Welsh and has produced three novels, three collections of short stories, children’s stories, scripts and a poetry collection.

Susan Walton has translated thirteen books into English, mostly children’s novels and popular non-fiction titles. During 2020 she was mentored as an early career literary translator under the Literature Wales scheme, and translated Sian Northey’s first novel, Yn y Tŷ Hwn.
