Part two of our popular series on the common questions received by the Society of Authors’ Contracts Advisory team from members. Join us for a fun, interactive session to get to know the staff who deal with your queries and ask your questions live.

The Advisory team offers the confidential, individual vetting of a range of contracts, from publishers to production companies and literary agencies, and advice on a broad range of queries related to the business of writing, illustration and literary translation.

This event will be chaired by Ruby Chopra and presented by Catherine Fuller and Sarah Burton.

What will this session cover?


This session will touch on a broad range of areas, including:

  • How to go about reverting rights
  • Tackling the omission of a credit
  • The risks of writing about real people
  • Collaborating with other creators

Programme

  • 5 mins – Welcome and introductions by the chair, Ruby Chopra
  • 50 mins – Discussing 10 common questions with Catherine Fuller and Sarah Burton
  • 20 mins – Additional questions from the audience
  • 5 mins – Summary and closing comments

Sarah Burton – Head of Contracts Advisory Team; Literary Estates

Sarah Burton heads up the SoA’s Advisory team. She also works on licensing rights in the Literary Estates department.

 

Ruby Chopra (Chair) – Senior Membership Administrator

Ruby Chopra is a member of the Membership Services Team. She is also the co-ordinator of the Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network.

 

Catherine Fuller – Contracts Advisor & Projects Manager

Catherine Fuller is a member of the Contracts Advisory Team with a particular focus on translation. She is also co-ordinator of the Translators Association. Her other roles include looking after the SoA archives.

Financial support for authors in need through the health crisis and beyond

Since March 2020, the Authors’ Contingency Fund has distributed over £1 million in small grants to authors facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.

With at least 57% of authors facing financial losses during the pandemic, we have helped people struggling financially due to contractual, employment and event cancellations, others who have lost income due to illness, and others prevented from working because of caring responsibilities.

As the health crisis continues, applications for grants continue to come in, and our emergency funds are running low.
