SoA in Scotland: Scottish Authors and the Climate Crisis

7 February @ 19:00 - 20:00 GMT

Virtual Event Virtual Event

All over the world the climate is changing, and this change is mainly destructive. Dangerous environmental destruction is the context of our existence, and it must affect our personal lives, and our writing, in many ways.  How should we respond as authors?  What do we need to know as authors?  Where can we find hope for the future?  What are our members already doing to help push change in the right direction? How can we cope with the impact on our mental health?

At our October AGM, we had a positive response to the suggestion that we, as the SoAiS, should address the climate crisis, building on the ongoing work of the SoA’s Sustainability Group with a focus on Scotland and Scottish authors.

We are holding an introductory online discussion event to find out how members of SoAiS think we should respond: Should we form a SoAiS climate crisis group? Set up a programme of webinars with different speakers? We will discuss what aspects of the climate crisis most interest our members, whether it be technological developments, sustainable lifestyle, wildlife protection or how to improve our sustainable energy infrastructure.

Financial support for authors in need through the health crisis and beyond

Since March 2020, the Authors’ Contingency Fund has distributed over £1 million in small grants to authors facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.

With at least 57% of authors facing financial losses during the pandemic, we have helped people struggling financially due to contractual, employment and event cancellations, others who have lost income due to illness, and others prevented from working because of caring responsibilities.

As the health crisis continues, applications for grants continue to come in, and our emergency funds are running low.

So, if you are in a position to help, please donate via the link below. If you are an author facing financial hardship, please click here to see if we can help.
